Public Health experts from statewide and local organizations convene over improving health equity in San Diego
Leaders from key public health organizations, research institutions and San Diego communities met to share strategies for addressing health disparities in San Diego at the Community Engagement for Health Equity Forum. The event was held in September by the San Diego Nutrition and Physical Activity Collaborative under the Network for a Healthy California and UC San Diego–Center for Community Health.
Dr. Sheila Gahagan wins 2012 “Women Who Mean Business” Award
The San Diego Business Journal named Dr. Sheila Gahagan one of its 2012 “Women Who Mean Business.” The Journal annually recognizes women who have contributed significantly to San Diego’s businesses. Gahagan was selected for her work as Chief of the largest division in Pediatrics through which she established key community partnerships and built a multi-institution accredited fellowship in the Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics specialty. Gahagan was among six other UC San Diego School of Medicine women leaders to receive the award.

Dr. Sheila Gahagan guest edits special journal issue on origins of obesity, Pediatric Center for Community Health researchers featured
Sheila Gahagan, MD, MPH and colleagues edited a special 2012 issue on “Developmental Origins of Pediatric Obesity” in the International Journal of Pediatrics which featured 9 other CDCH researchers. The issue provided evidence for the importance of promoting optimal weight gain and providing healthy environments for children from the time of conception continuing into childhood. Network for a Healthy California featured in Policy Link Report study on engaging youth and Promotoras to improve community health
The Network for a Healthy California and Champion Mom Xinia were featured in a 2012 report which describes their efforts to bring citywide attention to a Southeastern San Diego community health project, and their role in securing over $500,000 to restore a community park and a citywide community garden ordinance, as part of the project.
Lakeysha Sowunmi serves as keynote speaker at California Department of Public Health Conference
Center for Community Health staff member Lakeysha Sowunmi, with the Network for a Healthy California African American Campaign, delivered a keynote speech at the 2012 California Department of Public Health Champion Mom Conference in September. The conference encourages and trains mothers throughout California to advocate for healthy changes in their community.
Dr. Sandra Daley Receives Over $700K to Increase Diversity in Health Professions
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently awarded $742,222 to UC San Diego’s Dr. Sandra Daley, professor of pediatrics and director of the Comprehensive Research Center in Health Disparities, to fund the Health Careers Opportunity Program/San Diego RegionalConsortium (HCOP/SDRC).
