The Health Careers Opportunity Program, San Diego Regional Consortium (HCOP/SDRC)
CDCH is committed to maintaining an educational pipeline for health and allied health professions preparation of Underrepresented and Disadvantaged students. To achieve this goal, UCSD SOM established The Health Careers Opportunity Program, San Diego Regional Consortium (HCOP/SDRC) which is a partnership with The San Diego State University (SDSU) Pre-College Institute (PCI), The Scripps San Diego Border Area Health Education Center (SD/AHEC), nine Community Colleges participating in the UCSD “UniversityLink” Transfer Student Guarantee Program and 12 of their “feeder” middle and high schools in inner city, border, east suburban and rural communities.
In order to address each step in the educational pipeline, the partners conduct academic enrichment programs that address the barriers to developing the knowledge, accessing the resources, and obtaining the academic preparation that can lead to a career in the health care workforce. At the high school level this includes our Research Methodology Training Laboratory (RMTL).
The Research Methodology Training Lab (RMTL) supports the placement of rising high school junior and senior and community college and undergraduate university students from disadvantaged groups and populations at risk of experiencing health disparities in the RMTL and in other laboratories at the UC San Diego Health Sciences. The RMTL provides students with hands-on laboratory experience while working on original projects in biochemistry. Students also participate in daily seminars that include discussions of issues in health disparities research, cultural competency, undergraduate and graduate school admissions, manuscript and poster development, presentation skills, and goal setting.

High Tech High Internships
Since 2008, we have hosted interns from High Tech High, High Tech High Media Arts, High Tech High International, and this year we added High Tech High Chula Vista. We started with two interns, then four, then three, and now back to two per semester.
The High Tech High Internship program aims to foster personal growth and help students acquire workplace skills in a real-world environment. The program offers local organizations a well-supported intern who provides a modest return on investment.
- All High Tech High juniors are required to complete an internship in business or agency. The internship consists of an orientation followed by a three-week, full-time immersion at the worksite, concluding with the intern’s presentation of learning. Students receive credit for successfully completing their internship and related course work.
- Each student is paired with a workplace mentor who understands and supports the goals of the program. Mentors communicate regularly with the HTH Internship coordinator about student progress, attendance, and project development.
- All interns develop a substantial project(s) with the mentor that contributes to the work site.
- Near the end of the internship, each intern presents his/her work and overall learning to a panel of mentors and other site employees. This culminating event celebrates the student’s accomplishments and offers an occasion for reflection and critique.
- The site experience is supported by a seminar back at school, where students prepare for and reflect on their internship experiences. Intern assignments include mentor interviews, photojournalism, creation of an internship portfolio, project proposals, and regular reflection on growth and progress.
