The Hillcrest hospital is a 422-bed facility with a uniquely diverse patient population representing a cross-section of all socio-economic classes in need of both primary and specialized tertiary care. This facility also serves as the "county hospital" for the greater San Diego area. For internal medicine training, the Hillcrest facility is one of the core hospitals providing experiences in the MICU/CCU, wards and sub-specialty electives; while in pediatrics, its role is primarily to rotate through the NICU, newborn nursery, and ambulatory pediatric. The NICU is Level III with Baby-Friendly distinction, and has a 40-bed capacity. The Burn Unit serves as the regional burn referral center for both children and adults. Located near downtown San Diego and the San Diego airport, the hospital is situated in a pleasant and safe neighborhood within walking distance of one of San Diego's most active social scenes -- the neighborhood fo Hillcrest.

UCSD is proud to partner with the NMCSD in the training of our residents. Our PL-1 resident spends their adolescent rotation at the NMCSD campus working with adolescent medicine physicians in the outpatient setting. Our PL-2 serves as a supervising resident for the 21-bed inpatient pediatric unit, acts a pediatric consultant in the general emergency department, and at night supervises the 8-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. The patient population includes general pediatric and multiple subspecialty exposure.
